SAN MAMEDE DE LOUREZA

SAN MAMEDE DE LOUREZA

Visit a former medieval monastery with an 18th century church, home to a painted stone pulpit and twin baroque altarpieces.
This was the site of an ancient medieval monastery that we know about thanks to documentation preserved in various archives. It is first mentioned in a document from 1137 in which the monastery of San Mamede de Loureza is donated to the neighbouring monastery of Oia. Little evidence remains of its medieval past, as the present church dates from 1780. Its façade is presided over by San Mamede de Cesarea, a saint martyred in the 3rd century in present-day Turkey. Legend has it that he was thrown to the lions, but that he managed to save them. Inside, the church preserves a painted stone pulpit, which is accessed by a staircase attached to the wall, as well as two twin baroque altarpieces, one for the Sacred Heart and the other for Saint Anton.
