NEIGHBOURHOOD OF ARRABAL

Discover a charming old quarter with traditional Galician architecture, a square overlooking the harbour and monastery, and an old town hall converted into a...
Under the protection of the monastery grew the nucleus of the Arrabal. This neighborhood is one of the most attractive areas of Santa María de Oia parish. The central street, today named Vicente Lopez, was the obligatory way of the roads and in its current state still offers several houses of interest that reflect the Galician traditional architecture, especially those which were restored for rural tourism and the front of the rectoral.

The old town hall, which bears a plaque on its façade that references the year 1875, replaced an even older town hall, in the beginning of the street. Today it operates as a tourism office.

The square of Centinela, an ideal viewpoint that looks out over the port and the Santa María de Oia Monastery, whose names call to mind these tasks of warding off danger. Of note is an interesting calvary which, according to the inscription, was constructed in the 18th century and depicts a unique representation of the souls of purgatory on its base

From the balustrade, when the tide is low, one can see the remains of the base of a dyke that completely enclosed the cove, forming what locals call a “camboa”. This enclosure, with its sluice, made it possible to capture the fish the remained inside when the tide went out.
